His crime must not go unpunished, RSF said.<\/p>\n<p>After passers-by found him lying in a pool of blood at around 8:15 pm yesterday in Bandar, a municipality that is part of Narayanganj district,\u00a0Iliyas Hossain\u00a0was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead at 9 pm.<\/p>\n<p>Hossain\u2019s family believe\u00a0he was killed in reprisal for articles he had written for the\u00a0Dainik Bijoy\u00a0daily about the criminal activities of local gangsters, especially drug dealing and the provision of illegal gas connections. Two brothers who were arrested because of his articles, Tushar et Turjoy Miah, had just been released on bail.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, SAARC Journalist Forum, SJF condemned the incident occurred with journalist of Bangladesh Iliyas Hossain and demand Bangladesh government to give justice to him.<\/p>\n<p>Forum urge Bangladesh government to provide security of journalists of Bangladesh and said not to repeat again these kinds of incident.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Violent crime :<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe call on the Narayanganj district prosecutor\u2019s office to order an immediate investigation to ensure that Iliyas Hossain\u2019s brutal murder does not go unpunished,\u201d said Daniel Bastard, the head of RSF\u2019s Asia Pacific desk. \u201cIn view of the extremely dangerous environment for reporters in Bangladesh, we suggest that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina\u2019s government should create an effective mechanism for protecting journalists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daily Samakal\u00a0reporter\u00a0Shariful Alam Chowdhury\u00a0was\u00a0nearly beaten to death\u00a0by ten thugs armed with steel bars in Muradnagar, on the outskirts of Cumilla, 100 km east of Dhaka, on 4 July, after writing about alleged corruption and nepotism involving a local official.<\/p>\n<p>As RSF reported at the time, another newspaper journalist,\u00a0Shelu Akand, was\u00a0left for dead\u00a0after being badly beaten by men with steel bars in the northern city of Jamalpur last December.<\/p>\n<p>According to RSF\u2019s tally, at least 16 journalists have been the victims of serious violence in Bangladesh since the start of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Bangladesh is ranked 150th out of 180 countries in\u00a0RSF&#8217;s 2020 World Press Freedom Index.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reporters Without Borders (RSF) calls for an independent investigation into yesterday\u2019s murder of a Bangladeshi newspaper reporter whose coverage of criminal activity in an industrial area south of the capital, Dhaka, had led to the arrest of two local gang leaders.
