Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has made her first public statement following her release from prison, urging her fellow citizens to strive for a &#8220;democratic Bangladesh where all religions are respected.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a video message delivered in Bangla, Zia expressed gratitude for the support and prayers she received during her incarceration. &#8220;Thanks to the blessings of Allah, I am now able to address you,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We have managed to overcome this oppressive government. I honor those who sacrificed their lives for our cause.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a video message delivered in Bangla, Zia expressed gratitude for the support and prayers she received during her incarceration. &#8220;Thanks to the blessings of Allah, I am now able to address you,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We have managed to overcome this oppressive government. I honor those who sacrificed their lives for our cause.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Zia emphasized the need to build a new Bangladesh from the foundation of their recent victory, highlighting the role of youth and students as pivotal in this effort. &#8220;We must create a democratic nation where all religions are respected. Our youth and students will lead this transformation. We envision a progressive Bangladesh characterized by peace and prosperity, free from revenge and hatred,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>At 79, Zia had been serving a 17-year prison sentence for corruption, handed down in 2018 during Sheikh Hasina&#8217;s administration. Her release was granted through an executive order by President Mohammed Shahabuddin, following the downfall of Hasina&#8217;s Awami League government.
