The <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><b>SAARC Journalists Forum<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\u00a0has condemned the arrest of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><b>Sandaruwan Senadheera<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">, editor of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><b>Lanka e News<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">, calling it a serious threat to press freedom in South Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">In a statement issued on March 11, the forum said Senadheera was arrested at\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><b>Bandaranaike International Airport<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><b>Katunayake<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><b>Sri Lanka<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">, shortly after returning to the country following 16 years in exile abroad. The organization expressed concern that detaining a senior journalist immediately upon his return could undermine the principles of free expression and create an atmosphere of fear among media professionals across the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The forum urged authorities in Sri Lanka to ensure Senadheera\u2019s immediate release and guarantee a fair and transparent legal process. It also called on the government to refrain from targeting journalists for political or other motives and to ensure that the media can operate freely without intimidation. The statement, issued by\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><b>Raju Lama<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">, president of the forum\u2019s Central Executive Committee, stressed that safeguarding press freedom is a fundamental responsibility of any democratic state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Meanwhile, court proceedings related to Senadheera were discussed before the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><b>Supreme Court of Sri Lanka<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">, where he is facing 14 contempt of court applications linked to articles allegedly published on the Lanka e News website that were said to have defamed members of the judiciary. The court was informed that Senadheera had not appeared as he was residing in the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><b>United Kingdom<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\u00a0and had not yet received official notices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The case was heard before a three-judge bench comprising Justices\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><b>Buwaneka Aluvihare<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><b>Sisira de Abrew<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">, and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><b>Anil Goonaratne<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">, who directed the petitioner to amend the case caption to include the accused\u2019s updated address in the United Kingdom. The matter has been scheduled to be mentioned again on May 16.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The complaints were filed by\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><b>Madura Vithanage<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">, a former deputy mayor of the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><b>Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte Municipal Council<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">, who alleged that a series of articles published on the Lanka e News website and associated social media platforms ridiculed and intimidated judges from magistrates\u2019 courts to the chief justice. The petitions claim that the content insulted and defamed members of the judiciary and amounted to contempt of court under Article 105(3) of the Constitution of Sri Lanka.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The petitioner has requested the court to restrain Senadheera from publishing further statements or articles allegedly scandalising judges or judicial institutions, including the Supreme Court and the Judicial Service Commission, until the conclusion of the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">During the hearing,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><b>Hemantha Warnakulasuriya<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\u00a0appeared for the petitioner, while\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><b>Sanjay Rajaratnam<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\u00a0represented the attorney general.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><b>J. C.
