According to investigators, Best approached a checkpoint near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, pulled a handgun from a bag, and opened fire toward officers. Secret Service agents returned fire, critically wounding the suspect, who later died while being transported to George Washington University Medical Center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">One civilian bystander was also injured during the exchange of gunfire.
