New Delhi. The planned visit of Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri to Nepal has been postponed, according to multiple reports published on May 8. The two-day visit to Kathmandu was originally scheduled for May 11–12 and was expected to focus on strengthening ties with the new Nepali government led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah.
Indian officials reportedly informed Kathmandu that the postponement was due to Misri’s prior commitments, though no new date has been announced.
However, Nepali media reports say the delay may also be linked to rising tensions over the disputed Lipulekh border area and the recent decision by India and China to resume the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra route through the contested region. Nepal had objected to the move, saying the area remains disputed.
Some reports also suggested that Prime Minister Balen Shah had not agreed to meet the visiting Indian Foreign Secretary, which may have contributed to the postponement.
The visit was expected to be the first high-level diplomatic engagement between the new Nepali administration and the Indian government since the formation of Nepal’s new government in March 2026.
