New York. Nepal has been elected as the Vice-Chairman of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the Asia-Pacific region.
Nepal’s Lok Bahadur Thapa has been elected as the Vice President of ECOSOC, one of the main six organs of the United Nations.
The 54-member ECOSOC will be led by Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Thapa. Next year, Nepal will be the Chairman of the Asia-Pacific region.
Along with Nepal, Poland and Costa Rica have also been elected vice presidents in the council. According to the United Nations Information Center, Poland was selected from Eastern European countries and Costa Rica from Latin American and Caribbean countries.
Canada has been elected as the President of the Council. According to the Center, the vice-president will be selected from African countries in the near future.
SAARC Journalist Forum President Raju Lama and Secretary General Md Abdur Rahman have congratulated Thapa to be elected as Vice President of ECOSOC of the United Nations and wishes successful tenure.
Meanwhile, Ambassador Thapa has expressed his commitment to work in close contact with all member countries in accordance with the mandate of the Council in order to achieve the goal of sustainable development.
