New York: The President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Lok Bahadur Thapa met with members of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and reaffirmed that inclusive multilateralism must place Indigenous Peoples at its core.
He emphasized that Indigenous communities are vital contributors to environmental protection, cultural preservation, and sustainable development worldwide.
The ECOSOC President also noted that upcoming UN processes—including preparations for the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development and broader UN80 reforms—will continue to reflect and incorporate the Forum’s recommendations.
He further stressed the importance of strengthening Indigenous participation and protecting the role of the Permanent Forum within the UN system.
