Washington, D.C., July 24: U.S. President Donald Trump attended the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) Dinner on Friday, marking his first appearance at the event as president after years of skipping the annual gathering. The dinner was moved to the Waldorf Astoria Hotel and held under heightened security following the April shooting that disrupted the original event.
Opening his remarks with the message, “The show must go on,” Trump praised journalists for their work before shifting to familiar criticism of what he described as “fake news.” His speech combined calls for national unity with sharp political humour and attacks on media organisations and political opponents.
The evening honoured outstanding journalism, including awards recognising investigative reporting, and paid tribute to Secret Service personnel and Washington Hilton staff for their actions during the April security incident. White House Correspondents’ Association President Weijia Jiang emphasised the importance of press freedom and resilience in the face of violence.
Security was significantly strengthened for the rescheduled event, with a smaller guest list, strict screening procedures, and enhanced Secret Service measures. Several senior administration officials, including First Lady Melania Trump and Vice President JD Vance, did not attend because of prior commitments or scheduling reasons.
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is an annual event celebrating the First Amendment, recognising excellence in journalism, and raising scholarship funds for future journalists. This year’s gathering carried added significance as it reaffirmed the role of a free press following the disruption of the original April event.
