Washington, May 24, 2026 — The White House was briefly placed on lockdown after gunfire erupted near a security checkpoint outside the presidential complex on Saturday evening while President Donald Trump was inside the building. Authorities confirmed that Secret Service personnel responded immediately, fatally shooting the suspect during the confrontation.
Officials identified the suspect as 21-year-old Nasire Best of Maryland. According to investigators, Best approached a checkpoint near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, pulled a handgun from a bag, and opened fire toward officers. Secret Service agents returned fire, critically wounding the suspect, who later died while being transported to George Washington University Medical Center.
One civilian bystander was also injured during the exchange of gunfire. Authorities said it remains unclear whether the bystander was struck by bullets fired by the suspect or by return fire from officers. No Secret Service agents were injured in the incident.
