Évian-les-Bains, France | June 17, 2026 – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France, marking their first face-to-face meeting in 16 months. The two leaders discussed trade relations, defense cooperation, energy security, and maritime safety.

A key issue raised by Prime Minister Modi was the safety of Indian seafarers working in the Gulf region. He emphasized the importance of secure international shipping routes, noting that a significant number of Indians are employed in the global maritime industry.

President Trump described the meeting as productive and said both countries would continue working toward strengthening economic ties and advancing trade negotiations. Discussions also touched on regional developments in the Middle East and the security situation around the Strait of Hormuz.

The meeting comes amid ongoing efforts by Washington and New Delhi to resolve trade disputes and deepen strategic cooperation. Both leaders reaffirmed the importance of the U.S.-India partnership in promoting stability, economic growth, and security in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Modi-Trump meeting was one of the most closely watched bilateral engagements at the 2026 G7 Summit, highlighting the growing importance of India-U.S. relations on the global stage.
