Kabul. The meeting was attended by members of SAARC Afghanistan journalists, chaired by Mr. Gul Mohammad Gran. Participants held comprehensive discussions on the country’s media situation, the challenges facing journalists, and future steps.
During the meeting, deep concern was expressed about the current condition of journalists and media outlets in Afghanistan. Participants said that economic hardships and the lack of job opportunities have forced many journalists to leave the profession. They emphasized that serious, practical, and sustainable measures must be taken to address the problems faced by journalists and media organizations.
The meeting also included a detailed discussion on the growing difficulties faced by Afghan journalists in the region, particularly in Pakistan. Participants stated that Afghan journalists in Pakistan are facing harassment, pressure, arrests, and detention, and many are living under serious security and legal threats. They added that the lack of documentation, residency issues, and limited legal support have placed Afghan journalists at significant risk.
Mr. SK Popal also addressed the meeting and highlighted the severe challenges facing Afghan journalists. He said that journalists are struggling with harsh economic conditions, many remain unemployed, and they are dealing with a serious decline in income. He stressed that Afghan journalists are in urgent need of financial support so they can maintain their professional activities and continue their role of informing the public.
At the end of the meeting, participants agreed to coordinate their efforts to address the problems of Afghan journalists, raise their voices to national and international institutions, and take practical steps to protect journalists’ rights, safety, and support.
