Beijing. China has dismissed Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong, according to official statements and multiple international reports, marking another high-level shake-up within the country’s diplomatic establishment.
The decision was announced on April 14 by China’s human resources authorities, confirming that Sun had been removed from his position as Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Sun Weidong, a senior diplomat who previously served as China’s ambassador to India and Pakistan, had been responsible for parts of Beijing’s Asian diplomacy portfolio before his dismissal.
Reports indicate that the move comes amid a broader internal anti-corruption campaign and continuing restructuring within China’s foreign policy and security institutions.
As of now, Chinese authorities have not publicly detailed the specific reasons for Sun’s removal beyond the formal dismissal notice. Analysts note that such personnel changes have become increasingly common as Beijing intensifies discipline and oversight across government ministries.
Sun Weidong had been appointed Vice Foreign Minister in 2022 and was one of several deputies serving under Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
