Beijing. China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi has warned that Taiwan remains the “biggest risk” to relations between Beijing and Washington during a high-level call with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, according to official summaries released Thursday.
Wang Yi emphasized that the Taiwan issue is central to China’s core national interests, urging the United States to honor its commitments and act cautiously.
He described Taiwan as the most sensitive and potentially destabilizing factor in China–U.S. relations.
Despite tensions, both sides called for preparations for high-level exchanges, signaling an effort to keep diplomatic channels open.
Why Taiwan Matters ?
Taiwan continues to be the most contentious issue between the two global powers. Beijing views the self-governed island as part of its territory, while the United States maintains support for Taiwan’s defense and democratic system.
Recent reports indicate Taiwan is expected to dominate upcoming top-level talks between Washington and Beijing, underlining how sensitive and strategic the issue has become.
The latest exchange reflects a dual-track relationship:
– Rising geopolitical tension over sovereignty and military posture in the Taiwan Strait
– Continued diplomatic engagement to prevent escalation and manage rivalry
China has repeatedly warned that actions supporting Taiwanese independence could cross a “red line,” while the U.S. insists on maintaining stability and deterrence in the region.
