Washington, D.C. | May 4, 2026 – An armed individual was shot by U.S. Secret Service officers near the White House on Monday, prompting a brief security lockdown in the surrounding area.

The shooting occurred near 15th Street and Independence Avenue, close to the Washington Monument. According to officials, Secret Service personnel identified a suspicious individual carrying a weapon.

When officers approached, the suspect reportedly drew a firearm and opened fire, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Agents returned fire, striking the individual.

The suspect was injured and taken to a hospital. Authorities also confirmed that one bystander sustained minor injuries, which are not considered life-threatening.

Following the incident, the area was immediately secured, and access to nearby roads was restricted. The White House complex was placed under a temporary lockdown, which was later lifted after the situation was contained.

Officials stated there is no indication of a wider threat to the public, describing the incident as an isolated incident.

Law enforcement agencies have launched an active investigation to determine the motive behind the shooting. Further details about the suspect have not yet been released.

A quick response by Secret Service officers prevented further escalation after an armed individual opened fire near the White House. The situation is now under control, with no ongoing public safety threat.
