New York, June 4, 2026 – New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani officially announced his endorsement of social worker and progressive organizer Brian Romero as a candidate for District 34 of the New York State Assembly.
This significant endorsement highlights Brian Romero’s growing popularity and strong position, proving that he is a leading candidate and a top choice for progressive voters. He is running to represent the Queens neighborhoods of Astoria, Corona, East Elmhurst, Jackson Heights and Woodside.
While working together in the State Assembly—when Brian Romero served as Chief of Staff to current Assemblymember Jessica Gonzales-Rojas—Mamdani and Romero built a strong record of making real and lasting changes for working New Yorkers.
Together, they have worked tirelessly on the front lines of Albany’s most important legislative battles and successfully led the charge to increase the progressive income tax rate so that millionaires and billionaires pay their fair share of taxes.
As strong supporters of public transportation, they have together led the “Fix the MTA” movement and worked to secure historic full funding for the MTA’s capital plan, ensuring that the subway and bus systems are safe, reliable, and accessible for millions of daily riders.
Beyond the borders of the state, these two leaders have stood shoulder to shoulder in the global justice movement. They have consistently used their positions and voices to advocate for the rights of Palestinians and an end to state-sponsored violence.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani said, “Brian Romero is not just a candidate who speaks of progressive values—he is an organizer who knows very well how to turn those values into law.
When we worked together in Albany, Brian was an essential ally in the fight to ensure fair taxation of the wealthy and full funding for the MTA’s capital plan, so that working-class Queens residents would have the public transportation they deserve.
Whether fighting for tenant protection or standing up for Palestinian rights, Brian never backed down from a tough fight.
“I am proud to support Brian because I know he will work from day one to build a Queens that is not for the few, but for everyone.”
“I am deeply honored to have the support of Mayor Mamdani,” said Brian Romero, candidate for Assembly District 34. “He is a leader who has changed the very idea of what is possible for working New Yorkers.”
“Working together in the Assembly, we have proven that it is possible to organize courageously to confront the billionaire class, ensure full funding for public infrastructure, and stand up for human rights at home and abroad.”
“I am ready to return to Albany with the same sense of urgency and commitment to ensuring that the people of Western Queens have truly affordable housing, fully funded public schools, and environmentally friendly and accessible public transportation.”
Brian Romero’s campaign has quickly united the progressive movement in Western Queens. In addition to the support of Mayor Mamdani, he has recently received the support of influential leaders and organizations such as Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, and the New York Working Families Party.
With the June 23 primary election fast approaching, the Romero campaign is preparing to conduct a large grassroots campaign across the district.
