Kathmandu, May 29, 2026 – Khenpo Chhimed Tsering (Dr. Lharkyal Lama) has been awarded the prestigious religious title of “Mahasadhamma Jyotikdhaj” by the Myanmar government for his significant contribution to the purity, protection and global propagation of Buddhism.
The Myanmar government has been awarding various religious honors to monks, nuns and devotees who have made outstanding contributions to the classical study of Buddhism, spiritual practice and the protection and promotion of the Buddha’s rule every year.
In the same vein, Khenpo Chhimed Tsering has been awarded the title of “Mahasadhamma Jyotikdhaj” for the year 2026 as a great standard bearer who illuminates the true religion of Buddha.
The award was presented by Myanmar Ambassador to Nepal Thant Sin during a special ceremony held at Ngagyur Pallyul Ling Monastery, Manichud, Sankhu-Shankarapur Municipality-8, Kathmandu on Friday.
This is the first time in history that the Myanmar government has bestowed this prestigious award on a scholar of the Mahayana Section. Last year, the title was conferred on Cambodia’s Supreme Patriarch, His Holiness Preah Maha Somedhadhipatya Kitti Uddesapandit Nun Negat, during a grand ceremony chaired by Cambodia’s Prime Minister, His Holiness Hun Sen.
The award distribution ceremony was attended by a significant number of heads of diplomatic missions from various countries, religious figures, devotees and well-wishers.
The event was attended by the Ambassador of Myanmar, Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) and First Secretary, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka, the Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) of the Indian Embassy, the First Secretary of the US Embassy, the President and General Secretary of the Mahabodhi Society in Bangalore, the President of the All Monks Federation, members of the Yolmo community and Dr. Karam Phuntsok from Bhutan.
In addition, Abhishek Joshi Vastu, Dr. Vasudev Shastri, Dr. Chintamani Yogi and Pushparaj Purush were also present at the event.
