Beijing / May 15, 2026 — Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump held a private meeting on Friday in Beijing as part of Trump’s high-profile state visit to China, amid growing global attention on the future of U.S.-China relations.
According to Chinese state media, the two leaders met privately following expanded bilateral talks at the Great Hall of the People. The discussions reportedly focused on trade cooperation, artificial intelligence, regional security, the Iran conflict, Taiwan, and broader geopolitical stability.
President Xi emphasized the importance of stable relations between the world’s two largest economies, warning that confrontation between Beijing and Washington could lead to serious global consequences. Trump, meanwhile, described the relationship with Xi as “strong” and said both sides had made progress in improving communication and reducing tensions.
Reports indicate the private meeting lasted several hours and included discussions on possible Chinese purchases of U.S. agricultural products, Boeing aircraft, and energy exports. U.S. officials also said the leaders discussed the ongoing Iran crisis and security concerns surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
The Beijing summit is being closely watched by governments and financial markets worldwide, as both nations seek to stabilize ties amid rising strategic competition and global economic uncertainty. Analysts say the meeting could shape the direction of U.S.-China diplomacy for the remainder of 2026.
Trump concluded his Beijing visit on Friday after additional meetings with Chinese officials and business leaders, while both sides signaled that further high-level dialogue may continue later this year.
